When using an air conditioner, it is very important to clean it from time to time. Cleaning an air conditioner gets rid of the accumulated dirt and dust and improves the performance of the unit.

From the aesthetic sense, cleaning also makes the air conditioning unit look spick and span. For cleaning an air conditioner, the essential tools that are required are a tin can, a vacuum cleaner, a long handled brush, an oil can, rags, detergent or other cleaning chemicals and screwdrivers and spanners.

For the window air conditioner unit, the first step is to remove the filter. After removing it, water should be sprinkled on it and using a rag, detergent should be applied on the filter. After the filter becomes soapy, it should be completely submerged in a tray of hot water and kept aside for about 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, it should be rinsed with hot and cold water and hung up to dry.

After this, the front grille has to be removed from the main body. Modern air conditioning units have latches and by simply removing the latches, the front grille can be taken out. After the front grill is removed, the metal cover has to be taken out by unscrewing the screws. The screws can be kept in the tin can. Then the oil plugs of the fan should be taken out to display the oil holes using a pin or screwdrivers. 3 to 4 drops of oil should be applied to the oil holes. Then dirt and dust should be removed from the front fin using the brush.

Once the dirt is gone, the surface should be sprayed with greasers or spray cleaners. After 15 minutes, hot water should be poured slowly to remove all the dirt. Care should be taken so that water doesn’t come in contact with the electrical cables and wires and the refrigerator coils. Any bent fins should now be straightened.

This is a delicate process and pressure should not be applied. For the condenser, the same process of cleaning and watering needs to be done. Since the condenser coils contain high pressure gases, the condenser fins should be handled with extreme care.

Then a rag should be used to wipe the fan blades. The final step is to vacuum the entire unit including the underside of the metal cover. Any excess water should be drained out and the air conditioner should be reassembled when it is completely dry.

For split and ductless air conditioners, cleaning is very easy. The first step is to take off the front cover. It should be cleaned and dried. Then the filters need to be taken out and cleaned in the same manner as described earlier. After this is done, a large plastic bag is needed for progressing further.

The plastic should be fixed to the back side of the unit so that it is attached with the unit. With one hand holding the front side of the bag, so that it catches any dirt and dust coming out of the unit, greasers or spray cleaners should be applied to the coils and the rotor. This has to be done very carefully so that the entire surface of the coils and the rotor are covered with the cleaning agent.

The mouth of the spray should be as close to the coils and the rotor as possible. After this is done and the unit is left for about 10 minutes, the sprayer should be filled with hot water and another round of spraying should be done to wash out dirt and dust.

All this while, the bag should be held carefully so that all the disposable from the unit, like the chemicals and the water fall into it. Water should be sprayed as long as dirty water flows out. Then the unit has to be vacuumed and allowed to dry before reinstalling and using. The condenser should also be cleaned from time to time. It must be dismantled, cleaned with chemicals and vacuumed. Care should be taken for the condenser coils because they contain high pressure gases. After this process, the unit will start cooling better.

Although split air conditioners are easier to install than window air conditioners, one should consult an expert before doing anything. It looks all so easy to install and disassemble a split air conditioner but the best option is to let an expert do it or even if someone wants to do it themselves, then do it in front of an expert.

To install the split air conditioner, the first job is to install the condenser unit. The condenser unit stays in the open, out of the house. Since outside air circulates through the condenser unit, there should be ample space around the unit. There should be at least 12 inches of space between the condenser unit and the wall of the house. 12 inches should also be kept free on both sides of the condenser.

After the proper space is selected, the pad should be laid on the ground, a check should be done to see that the pad is on even ground and then the condenser unit should be put on top of the pad.

The next step is to drill a hole in the wall through which the refrigerator coil will go inside the house. The room in which the air conditioning unit will be placed needs to be located and the wall opened up in that room. The refrigerator coil now needs to be connected to the condenser and run through the wall into the room. After this is done, the PVC line needs to be assembled and run into the room. The PVC line helps in condensation.

The final coil work is to connect the electrical cable and a low voltage wire to the condenser. The other end of the electrical cable and a low voltage wire is then run into the room. The wiring is complete at this point.

Now, the metal mounting bracket is screwed into the wall. While screwing the bracket, the users’ manual should be referred to and the bracket should be put up at the height that is recommended by the manufacturer.

Now the air conditioner unit needs to be fixed to the bracket. The last step is to make the final electrical and other wire connections. After this is done, the installation is complete and the split air conditioner is ready to work.

Opening or disassembling a split air conditioning unit by the user is not recommended at all. It is a simple process but an expert should be allowed to do the job or even if the user does it on his or her own, it should be done in the presence of an expert.

In any case, opening or disassembling a split air conditioner is a simple process. Before anything else, one should check that the electric supply is off and then take off the electric supply wires. At this point, it is advisable that one earths himself or herself.

The first work should be done on the indoor unit. The cover is first taken off. The modern split air conditioners have latches that attach the cover to the bracket. So, it’s a simple task of unlatching and taking off the cover. After the cover is off, all the open end of the wires should capped.

Extreme care should be taken not to break the refrigerator coils because gas runs through them and leaking may cause an explosion. After this is done, one needs to go outside and gently pull out all the refrigerator coils and the PVC line.

Once this is done, they need to be disconnected from the condenser unit. The condenser unit is then unscrewed and taken off the supporting pad. One should go inside now and take off the metal bracket using screwdrivers. This completes the opening and disassembling process.

Air conditioners are of two types. There are the window air conditioners and the split air conditioners. Functionally speaking, there is no major difference between a window air conditioner and a split air conditioner. Both are used to cool rooms. However, there are some differences technically.

A window air conditioner is a single unit. All the parts of the air conditioner reside within that one unit, including the compressor. In a split air conditioner, as the name suggests, the parts of the air conditioner are split.

The condenser is usually fitted outside the house or the room in which the indoor unit is installed. The condenser also contains the compressor. Refrigerator coils and PVC lines run from the condenser to the indoor unit.

A window air conditioner is fitted on a window or a space made by cutting the wall. Once the window air conditioner has been installed, the surrounding areas are sealed off properly so that there is no leakage of cold air. The indoor unit of a split air conditioner is fitted on the wall, at a height specified by the manufacturers.

There is no need to cut any window or any part of the wall, although some holes are made for the refrigerator coils and the PVC line. Apart from these differences, the way these air conditioners work is similar. Both have refrigerator coils that absorb heated and humid air from the room and replace it with cooled and dehumidified air.

Among all electrical appliances, air conditioners consume the maximum amount of power. With the general increase in global temperature, more and more consumers are now buying air conditioners. Air conditioners have now moved from luxury items to essential items. However, most users get a chock when they receive their first electricity bill after using the air conditioner.

An air conditioner is rated by the number of British Thermal Unites (BTU). BTU is used to gauge the energy efficiency ratio of an air conditioner. The energy efficiency ratio lists the number of BTU the air conditioner removes for each unit of power it draws to function. For split air conditioners, the energy efficiency ratio is called seasonal energy efficiency ratio.

It is common knowledge that more the energy efficiency ration more is the amount of power saved. Windows air conditioners consume less power than split air conditioners with the same BTU. However, it all depends on the positioning of the unit. A windows air conditioner that is not positioned to work at its best may end up consuming more power than a properly positioned split air conditioner with the same BTU.

It is a common misperception that a bigger air conditioner cools more.

Effective cooling

Contrary to this myth, effective cooling depends upon the positioning of the unit. However, the fact is that windows air conditioners work better in smaller rooms and split air conditioners are better for larger rooms. If someone buys a big house, the best option is to go for a ductless central air conditioning system.

People, who don’t want to invest so much, usually go for a normal split air conditioner or a windows air conditioner. If the rooms in the house are very large, then for effective cooling, a split air conditioner is a better option. But they are more expensive then windows air conditioners.

So, people may want to go for a mix and match solution and install split air conditioners in the drawing rooms and windows air conditioners in the bedrooms. However, another aspect of split air conditioners is that they are very quiet and may be installed in bedrooms if someone has trouble sleeping with noise around.

One of the most common issues that come up with split air conditioners is that they start to leak. The leaks could be of different types. There could be cases where water leaks out from the unit and there could be other cases where there is a leak in the Freon line.

When the refrigerator coils suck in warm air from the air and cools it. As a result of this cooling, condensed water vapor is formed on the refrigerator coils. When this water vapor is converted to water, it drips on the gutter tray. The gutter tray has an outlet that carries this water and disposes it elsewhere, in most cases, outside.

In some cases, this outlet gets blocked and the water starts accumulating in the gutter tray. This is when the air conditioner starts leaking. This can be resolved rather easily.

The more dangerous case is when there is a leak in the Freon line. As a result of this leak, highly pressurized Freon gas starts leaking into the room. In extreme cases, this can cause an explosion too. There are special leak detection solutions that can help identify this leak.

These solutions are applied to all parts of the Freon line. If there are bubbles forming, then one can identify that there is a leak. The moment a leak is identified, experts should be consulted to take care of this issue before it becomes too big an issue.

There are various ways to fix a hole or leak in the Freon line. However, fixing a hole in the Freon line doesn’t fall under the category of common troubleshooting. For these cases, it is almost mandatory to seek professional help. There are thousands of ac technicians on the yellow pages and one phone call is all that it takes to get someone come over and fix the leak.

For very small leaks, there are chemicals that are available in the market. For example, there is a chemical called Super Seal HVAC that can be used to fix small holes in the Freon line. However, this chemical will certainly not work for bigger holes.

If the air conditioner is losing too much of charge too frequently, that means the chemical is not working. In another method, smooth graphite and Teflon particles are mixed with the refrigeration oil and injected into the Freon line. These particles get forced into the leaks and stop them. However, this solution is also for small leaks. For larger leaks, experts must be consulted.

Recharge the air conditioning unit

The items that are needed to recharge the air conditioning unit are a pressure gauge and a refrigerant (Freon). At first, any leaks in the Freon line need to be detected and sealed. After the sealing is done, recharging is started. Any air conditioner has two pressure ports – high and low.

Recharging is always done through the low pressure port. So, the first step is to locate it. Usually, the high and low pressure ports are indicated with H and L respectively. Once the low pressure port is discovered, the cap on it should be cleaned thoroughly and then taken out.

The pressure gauge is then attached to the low port and with the air conditioner turned on, the pressure is gauged. The user manual will list the ideal pressure.

After the pressure is gauged and found to be low, the refrigerant is put inside the unit through the low pressure port until the pressure reaches the optimum level. Recharging a split air conditioner is also an issue that is best handled by experts. Before doing anything else, the users should check the yellow pages.

LG offers many premier split air conditioner models which are just apt for cooling, during hot summers. These air conditioner offer great cooling and are easy to install. They offer versatile usage and they can be used in many places such as private residences, hotel, hospitals, commercial complexes and much more.

If you have been looking for a split air conditioner system that gives you considerable cooling, the LG split ac models are the ones that you need to check out.

There are many advantages in using a split air conditioner. It’s the best thing to install, when you are in need of space. They work more quietly and are also more energy efficient since they do not need the use of any ducts. You would have to have a small hole drilled into the wall for installation purposes. Split air conditioners come with cooling power enough to give you the kind of cooling your require.

You can find all such advantages in using an LG Split air conditioner and much more. Lets’ take a look at a couple of LG split air conditioner models.

Shop for Deals on LG Dual Zone Ductless Mini Split Air Conditioner

One interesting LG spit air conditioner model is the LG LMU240HE. It has a 2 x 12,000 BTU and a 13 SEER Rating which means you get considerable high cooling from this model and energy consumption is also efficient. SEER is the rating given to denote energy efficiency of a split air conditioners and the higher the rating the better the air conditioner’s performance. In terms of noise, this is a system that does not produce much noise while running. Their computer controlled vanes allow for more natural flow of air and it can be operated via remote control.

Notably among them are Sanyo, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi, Baxi, Amcor and Freidrich. All the companies manufacture units with different cooling capacities and the range spans from 8500 to over 24000 BTU

Your buying decisions should be based on three aspects the BTU, the voltage and the window size.

The BTU

The BTU (British Thermal Unit) is the standard unit used to measure. The cooling capacity of an air conditioner depends on its tonnage. A one ton unit will usually have a cooling capacity of 12000 BTU while a 2 ton unit will have a capacity of 2400 BTU.

However, this is the cooling capacity that the unit can provide. Your choice should depend on the cooling needs of your house or the room where you intend to install the air conditioner. This requirement may increase based on the amount of sunlight received in the room, the presence of other electrical appliances specifically ones with heating elements, the number of people and of course the size of the room.

Electrical consumption

Another consideration should be the electrical consumption of the unit. If you use an air conditioner of lesser tonnage for a larger room it will consume more electricity. Also, many air conditioners available from new manufacturers have high electrical consumptions.

The exact amount of electricity required by a unit is usually mentioned in the manufacturer literature provided with it. Alternatively you can also check for the star ratings. The energy star rating is a government approved program that gives a seal of approval to products which display high levels of energy efficiency.

The Star logo is reserved for products that meet the stringent energy efficiency requirements set by the US department of energy and the EPA. The logo is given to products that do not compromise on performance and features yet maintain extraordinary standards or energy efficiency.

Noise

The next constraint should be the amount of noise made by the product. Even though it is normal for all air conditioners to make some amount of noise, the split air conditioners are by far the most silent as compared to all other types. The less noise can be attributed to the fact that the compressor is placed outside the house.

Unless you intend to change the shape and size of the window in your house you will also need to check the manufacturer specifications related to the size of the unit and the fitting requirements.

Compressors

The reliability of an air conditioner depends on the strength of its compressor. A good company will back their products 100%. So always look for a compressor with a minimum warranty of at least 5 years. The compressors used in air conditioners are by far the most sturdy electrical devices and are designed to function unhindered for 10 plus years. However it is possible that a malfunction in the other systems may cause a compressor failure or a leakage in the refrigerant used. The manufacturer should be willing to cover all of these possible malfunctions.

The price of split air conditioners for a minimum capacity unit which is a single zone machine that is the unit is placed only in one room and has a cooling capacity of 9000 BTU ranges between $1000 to $2000. While a larger single zone unit with a cooling capacity of 24000 BTU will cost between $2000 to $3500.

It is imperative that before you choose a unit you read the manufacturer literature carefully. A lot of manufacturers will add features such as free installation to their units. So check out the most popular and fast selling units in the market before buying one.

Split air conditioners have a split design with an external or out door unit that houses the compressor and one or more internal units that are served by the compressor and house the air handlers. Their design makes them similar to central air conditioning units however the fact that they use smaller air ducts makes them less expensive and easier to install.

In a split air conditioner the refrigerant is pumped to the cooling coil in the air handlers through the ducting. The conduit which just needs a three inch hole drilled in the wall connects the inner and the outer unit. It houses the refrigerant and suction tubing, the condensate drain and the power cable.

Advantages

Split system air conditioners have many advantages over the traditional central air conditioning systems. The primary benefit is ability for zoning so that you can cool or heat individual rooms, thereby saving energy. They are also considerable smaller than central air conditioners.

The internal units of split system air conditioners are designed to suit the decor of your home. The installation is fairly simple and one out door unit can serve up to four indoor units. Since the connecting conduit has to be bought separately and is available in different lengths you can place the internal and external units almost 50 feet apart.

There is also a lot of flexibility in terms of the indoor units. You can choose the traditional wall mounted design or go for the ceiling mounted model. The indoor units can also be suspended from the ceiling or you can opt for the newer floor standing models. Almost all manufacturers offer remote controlled units so it’s easier to switch them on or off.

The refrigerant used in most spilt system air conditioners in environment friendly Freon. Most manufacturers will include refrigerant specifications in the user manual.

While choosing a split air conditioner the first thing to look for is the cooling capacity.

Units are available from 12000 BTU and even though they are cheaper than central air conditioners they are certainly more expensive than the window air conditioners. Prices for a 1 ton unit can range from $1100 to $2300.

This does not include the installation charges. You will need the services of an HVAC professional to install a split air conditioner. He will set up the lines for drainage, electricity and coolant and put in the right amount of coolant. The tubing needed may have to be purchased separately.

Usually a single indoor unit is enough to cool one zone or room but this depends on the insulation, the amount of sunlight received in the room, other electrical appliances being operated in the room and the number of people. If your BTU requirement is more you can even opt for two indoor units for one room. Since the compressor is in the external unit, split air conditioners are remarkably quiet.

Depending on the BTU requirement and the number of rooms you will also have to make a choice between dual zone and triple zone versions. A dual zone model has two air handlers while a triple zone unit has three air handlers.

Many newer models also have heating options in the split air conditioning units. The heating is achieved through the use of electric heat strips or heat pumps.

The other things to consider would be the voltage requirements. The 5 star rating acts like a seal of approval from the US department of energy and is given to products that are very energy efficient without compromising on the performance or features. So look for the 5 star logo on the product.

After i renovated (gutted) our deck residence and remodelled it in the media place, I considered including ac. I decided the few hot days annually didn’t guarantee the extra price of ac. Boy was I completely wrong! In July of 2006, California saw a huge heat wave that was extremely intense.

The media room as totally un-usable as a result of excessive temperatures which created inside the small 250 sq . foot building. I needed to try and do something positive about this because the area was too nice not to use!

I considered a lightweight unit, but the size of the devices, their noise levels and requirement to have an exhaust hose made this an unappealing choice. I chose to get a split AC/heating system. The Hitachi RAS-09UH was priced proper and was powerful enough for our small building; and so i ordered it on-line. It arrived within five days of ordering, in tact and nearly prepared to install.

Before I continue, I must explain that i’m a checker by profession, but I had been raised by a contractor father. I learned the way to do most construction jobs at the start of my entire life. I did completed the whole media room on my own and so i chose to install the Hitachi RAS-09UH without any help. Only if experienced difficulty I possibly could always seek professional AC installer help. The installation manual states that professional installation is needed.

This product includes an internal unit approximately 8″ deep x 31″ long x 11″ wide and an outdoor unit 10″ deep x 30″ wide x 20 wide. These units must be linked together with a hose set which conducts the refrigerant lines. 2 power conduits will also be needed, while a draining line must also exit your building.

I ordered a 15 foot hose set together with my unit. I learned that no electrical wiring or conduits were included. I studied the poorly written installation manual many times. I needed a good idea how to do the majority of the tasks involved.

A trip to Home Depot and I was equipped with pre-wired conduit along with other supplies. I installed a 15amp exterior electrical box using a locking socket after which made the electrical connections to the units. That of a pain ! The terminals were tiny and yes it was quite difficult to make the connections. (in simple terms it’s a 5 minute job…not this time!)

After making the interior electrical connections and connecting the refrigerant lines to the interior unit, the time had come to put the mounting bracket on the wall. I then drilled a 2 inch hole in the wall, that the manual stated was the correct size. This hole, proved to be too small to accommodate all the lines, and so i drilled another hole to take the draining line.

Another problem was obtaining the interior unit to hang properly on all the 4 hooks of the mounting bracket. It was impossible, so I used just the top two and yes it holds perfectly. A word of advice: ensure the drain line is installed on the side of the exit hole in the wall. Also, be sure the unit is level to permit permanently drainage.

Next I connected the refrigerant lines to the exterior unit. The manual states the lines should be bled (vacuumed). Obviously I could not try this because I lacked the correct tools. I went ahead a make the connections, in the hope the unit had enough refrigerant to compensate for any kind of air within the lines. After connecting the lines I opened the refrigerant values and I noticed the pleasant sound with the lines being filled! Until now so great!

After i drilled some holes within the concrete slab and screwed the outside unit right down to the slab.

The moment of truth was here; time and energy to turn the breaker on and power up. As I pressed the on button of the LCS remote, I fully expected failure, but i’m happy to report the unit hummed to life! Very quiet and incredibly effective. So far, this unit worked like a dream! I may have an AC person come out to test the refrigerant line and charge, until then it is working great!

The handy remote control is needed for many operations. It may be set to AC/Fan/Dehumidify/or Heat. It’ll be great as a supplemental heating system so we could turn the radiant heat down a touch on very cold days. Another highlight is an Air Sweep setting which turns moves the direction of the forced air down and up.

It is a silent feature which will help to better circulate the air. The indoor unit has two removable and cleanable air conditioning filters. These aren’t HEPA type filters however. They are meant to keep the running elements of the AC clean during operation. Filters appear easy to wash plus they are easy to take out and replace.

The manufacturers should unit included the necessary electrical wires, plug and conduits. An all-in-one package could have been great. Also, the installation instructions were only fair. They might have been more specific and easier to read. I am glad I took the job on myself. I would only recommend the job to someone familiar with electrical and general contracting work.

I acquired the whirlpool Mastermind split air conditioning unit, 1 year back after my old AC had finally damaged. I did initially considered taking an 1ton split ac,simply because it would be less expensive. But after checking versions available, and hearing the recommendation of the salesman, i made a decision to purchase the Whirlpool Mastermind 1.5 Ton, split air conditioning unit, and i have to admit i’m happy i did.

The Whirlpool Mastermind includes many excellent characteristics such as the 6th sense mode(fuzzy logic operation)when the temperature and fan speed will be immediately set according to the specific room temp. You can use the timer, to instantly turn off the air conditioner, at a set time. It is particularly useful in order to set it for two or three hrs, in which time the space needs to be cooled properly, as well as you don’t want to worry about forgetting to switch it off.

The sleep functionality function, gives you a far more comfortable atmosphere for sleep, and the product will stop functioning automatically after working for 8hours. The turbo function can be used to start or stop fast cooling.Fan cool works at high fan speed, changing the set temperature automatically to 18C.

Overall i’m happy using the Whirlpool Masterminds performance. It cools the space in a few minutes, and its procedures are very noiseless, and smooth. Whirlpool air conditioner filters preservation can be quite simple, and can be achieved in a couple of minutes by almost any person. It has a 2 star rating, so it’s not necessary to worry too much about energy consumption.

The only problem i’ve using the Whirlpool Mastermind, is actually it is extra large out of doors unit, that is rather heavy, and really weighty. It can take some work to setup, but since set up was done by the provider, which was okay. Additionally you get three free of charge assistance checkup’s which is a good offer.

I have not experienced any issues with mine [If you encountered any please see the whirlpool air conditioner troubleshooting section], and i would suggest this ac to anyone, which wants a good 1.5 ton Air conditioner at reasonable price, and good value.

Other types of AC includes the:
Whirlpool air conditioner window unit [See next review]
Whirlpool air conditioner wall unit [See next review]
Whirlpool air conditioner 1 ton [See next review]

Split air conditioners are, in many ways, a hybrid that offers some of the benefits of central air conditioning and some of the benefits of a window unit. Like a central system, the compressor is located outside, which makes them quieter than window units.

However, there is no need to install extensive duct work throughout the entire house. Most units require only a three inch hole in the exterior wall to connect the compressor and the interior air handler.

Rooms that are not as easy to cool as the rest of the house, such as those with western exposure, can benefit from the additional cooling power. Split units are also useful for room additions, factory offices, and vacation cabins. They are sometimes installed to increase the cooling capacity of a central unit in a two story home.

Basic installation for split air conditioners is simple, but purchasers of these units have noted that the instructions are sketchy and poorly translated into English. For simple mounts, where the air handler is attached in the immediate vicinity of the exterior duct, it is not difficult to install the unit yourself. If you are using a ceiling mount or ducting the unit to more than one air handler, it may require professional installation unless you possess prior knowledge and skills.

These units are easy to maintain. They include a corrugated filter that is washable, so you just need to rinse it out occasionally. Keeping the air handler free of dust and the outside compressor free of debris is about all that is required.

Amcor produces split air conditioners in a variety of sizes and styles. The Amcor 9,000, 12,000, 18,000, and 24,000 models provide heating as well as cooling. These models also come with a remote. Amcor AMS091HX, AMS121HX, AMS241HX, and AMS181HX models do not have remotes and are for cooling only. They are rated at approximately 9,000, 12,000, 24,000, and 18,000 Btu respectively.

People who have purchased these items are divided on their reviews. Most of the complaints have come from those who received units that failed while still under warranty. They report that Amcor maintains only one representative for their split air conditioners and that he is difficult to contact.

There are also complaints that the company has been unresponsive when it came to replacing defective units. It also appears that many local service companies are not familiar with the systems and have had to rely on the Amcor representative to instruct them on how to make repairs. In several instances, this approach has not led to an effective repair.

In addition, there are complaints that promised reimbursements for service calls have been slow to arrive and then have been partial payments rather than the agreed upon amount.

On the positive side, purchasers who received units that were not defective have been well pleased with their performance. They report that the units have met expectations for cooling capacity and energy savings.
