I had to laugh when Jerry came home one evening and asked if I would mind if he were to spend some money on the local children. I couldn’t believe he was asking if this was okay. I knew that he had always wanted to give back to those who made him a success if he was ever to get his own HVAC company. Mike had already left the business and Jerry was on his own. Jerry said that one of the local children’s groups had come to him and asked if he would like to sponsor the children’s center this year. They needed new shirts and pajamas for the kids at the orphanage. They also had a T-ball team that was in need of new equipment and none of the kids' parents could afford it. Jerry didn’t want to tell them no, so he came home to talk it over with me. Our bank account was good enough that we could have taken it out of our personal finances, but he wanted it to come from the business funds. He said it would be better if we used the business funds and used it as a write-off. That same weekend, Jerry presented gifts to the orphanage along with new t-shirts and pajamas. He also gave uniforms to the t-ball team and all the equipment they needed. He knew that it not only helped out the needy, but it was also a way of getting some good advertising. I know he mentioned advertising for the HvAC company, but I also knew that even if there wasn’t any advertising, he would still have given it to the kids.

Jerry’s business was growing so quickly that he found he was in need of at least one employee and possibly even two. He wanted to make sure he wasn’t using any of the business money for his personal needs, which was his biggest challenge. He had started out taking a minimum amount of pay, but he was now taking out more than what he was previously getting paid. It soon got to the point where he needed to hire a couple of employees. He decided that he was going to hire in the same way as he had gotten his first HvAC position. He wanted to go to the local technical center and hire their best students to work as apprentices. Not only was he getting good workers, but since they didn’t have any work experience, he would be able to pay them cheaper wages. He went down to the local technical center and he inquired about their students. The instructor happened to be the same instructor that he had trained under. He asked him about his top students. The instructor remembered Jerry and asked how he was doing? He introduced him to a man and a woman who were both excellent HVAC trainees. Jerry was impressed with both people and asked if they would be willing to work with him at his new HvAC company. It was the first employee Jerry was to hire, but it wasn’t going to be his last. His HVAC company was only going up from here. He couldn’t wait until he was making enough money that his wife and daughter would never want for anything.

Mike had no idea what kind of a reputation my husband had for himself, from when he worked for his previous boss. Some of his customers were looking him up and wanting to follow him. They didn’t trust their HvAC equipment to anyone but Jerry. It was hard to believe that he had so many customers in such a short time. Not only was his reputation a big draw, but he was busy doing his own advertising. He was out there handing out business cards and making sure everyone knew about the business. He spent a lot of his money on putting their business info on bus benches and in grocery stores. Never had Mike seen anyone hussle the way Jerry did. He handed out business cards at church and even when he was at ball games. I knew that a lot of the reason people liked Jerry, was his business ethic. He treated every customer like they were his one and only customer. He was always on time when he went to do a job and he never gave them anything less than one hundred percent. The only worry Mike had about the HvAC side of the business was the competition. He knew that he was getting a lot of competition from his previous boss, but Jerry was handling it well. He continued to take care of his customers like he hadn’t anything to worry about. The business was growing and everything was going well. Mike was thinking about getting out of the business and retiring, and he knew that Jerry would have no problem keeping the HvAC side of the business running and thriving.

My wife and Mike's wife were already making plans for an amazing grand opening. You have no idea how surprised we were when we came to work and found new business cards sitting on our desks. They had all the information needed for both the plumbing, HVAC and joined business, on each business card. When they came into the building toting food, we were shocked. They had everything set up outside the building for an old fashioned BBQ. They had the grills set up for hamburgers and hot dogs. There were about ten different foods that went with the meats. There was even a DJ setup and playing music. Everyone was joining in and having a good time. We were welcoming our company into their homes. We got a lot of prospective customers that afternoon, and a few jobs lined up. I was so proud of what they had done when we weren’t looking. I was happy with the business we were bringing in and we hadn’t officially opened the plumbing and HVAC business. Over the next two weeks, we were already getting more customers than we were sure we could handle. They were mostly coming from the people who had been to the BBQ,while some were referrals from our previous customers.
