Everyone in my city got a notice telling us that the power would be turned off all weekend for some repairs. This wouldn’t be an issue if it wasn’t winter time. Our area doesn’t get freezing cold but I have a large collection of reptiles and invertebrates. Each of them has specific temperature requirements. Moving such a large collection to a friend’s house is not possible. That’s why I started looking for ways I could keep them warm instead. I ended up deciding to get a space heater and a generator. The space heater won’t keep the cold blooded animals as warm as they might like, but it will keep them warm enough that they will live. If I use a space heater in the reptile room it should keep them nice and warm for a few days. So I went out and got the cheapest generator I could find and then made sure I had enough gas to keep it running all weekend. I won’t feed the reptiles a few days before the power outage. I don’t want them to get sick. I will also crank up the central heater Friday night to make sure the house is nice and warm and can hold heat for a few days. I feel pretty good about this and I know the animals will be safe. Besides, it’s nice to have an emergency plan in case the power goes out unexpectedly sometime anyhow. Now I just need to find a way to keep myself entertained without internet or television. It shouldn’t be too difficult, given all the animals I have.
